Since we're posting songs from musicals I'll post this.
shinyblurry says...As much as I disagree with mormonism, it's easy to see what this really is, which is an attack on faith, especially faith in Jesus Christ. They just found a way to caricature it in mormonism. It's really quite a sad thing to watch those people revel in the mockery. Our society has degenerated to such a point where it is socially acceptable to openly ridicule millions of people. While I am concerned for the souls of the mormons, I think this attack on their faith is really quite despicable.

FFS. You know what, I'm too tired to write something significant to this.
Just go wiki "The Book of Mormon(musical)" and scroll down for the churches response. In short, you're in idiot.

First, the churches response is described as "measured", which it is, and not favorable. Second, do you honestly think the mormon church is pleased with having their beliefs ridiculed? They simply realized that there was nothing they could do about it, and to fight against it would only call more attention to it.
UsesProzacOh no, poor Mormonism. Maybe I can just forget their past of rape, kidnap and forced marriages.

IssykittyWaaaaah waah waah wahwahwahwahwahwaaaaaah! Who am I???
shinyblurry says...I'm not defending the mormon church, I am just commenting that the level of discourse in society is at an all time low, that this is socially acceptable. Obviously it isn't a winning issue with videosift, but I think that its wrong to treat people this way.

IssykittyYeah, it's called parody. If you can't laugh at yourself then you need to shoot yourself.

kymbosAhh, the heady mix of capitalism and fundamentalist christianity that keeps America WINNING!

Fuck me, the idiot is right. Maybe we should unite the nation, nay the world, under the banner of Jesus? We'd need a slogan though. How about "God with us"? Yeah, that works. Then we could round up all those dodgy looking non-christians. Obviously we'd someway of easily identifying the though. Maybe an armband of some sort? Only thing is, once we've rounded them up what do with them? Can't have them hanging around, they'd only cause trouble. What would be needed is some kind of ultimate answer... a "final solution" if you will.
Now that I've invoked godwin, can we drop this crap and move on?

jmzero says...This is parody done with an extremely light touch, really - and is amazingly inoffensive. There's not really any reason this music couldn't have come from a believing Mormon.
To underscore that point, it's not much different than stuff members have produced themselves (partially with the intent of demonstrating that they don't always take themselves completely seriously). For example, productions of "Saturday's Warrior" by various Mormon groups and units were extremely popular in the 70's and 80's, and the missionaries in it are at least as goofy as the ones in the BoM musical. I couldn't find a video of the stage production - but this song is normally performed by a chorus line of missionaries in sunglasses (again, in Mormon churches with approval by a bishop).
Even most devout/lame Mormons I know see the BoM musical as positive publicity that's surprisingly inoffensive (similar to South Park's Mormon bits, which generally were quite popular with Church members). The "official" church isn't exactly going to sanction it, but the position it has taken - something like "we hope people will come to us to get the real story" is pretty dang close.

I'm not sure that the level of discourse has changed, so much as Christianity has become an acceptable target again. Parker and Stone actually treat the Mormon church with an unprecedented level of respect considering all the things that South Park has parodied, as evidenced by the "All About Mormons" episode. They present the religion as weird, but in the end, the people of South Park are shown to be a million times stranger and the Mormons decide the best course of action is to leave all the idiots to themselves.
Have your say...
